Mr. Nafees Imtiaz Islam

Mr. Nafees Imtiaz Islam, Senior Assistant Director (Research Centre), Daffodil International University (DIU) has been selected as ‘National Consultant’ of International Trade Centre (ITC) for the project for “Enhancing Export Capacities of Asian LDCs for Intra-regional Trade” and signed a contract with ITC to accomplish the same. The International Trade Centre (ITC) is the joint agency of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations (UN). Their aim is for businesses in developing countries to become more competitive in global markets, speeding economic development and contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Global Goals for sustainable development.

The project aims to contribute to increase exports of Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) from 6 Asian least developed countries (LDCs) – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Nepal – to China, to take advantage of Asia's largest and most dynamic import market, as a stimulus to boost intraregional trade. Increasing their access to the Chinese market will constitute a step towards Asian LDCs’ export expansion to other regional and international markets.

The project adopts a three-pronged strategy:

  1. Production of comprehensive materials and tools to increase availability and accessibility of customized trade-related information on the Chinese market;
  2. Capacity building to improve SMEs’ awareness and understanding on how to export to the Chinese market;
  3. Application of the information, knowledge and skills transferred through direct contacts with potential Chinese buyers and business partners, and identification of new business opportunities and partnerships.

Mr. Nafees needs to undertake a study in Bangladesh within the framework of the project for Enhancing Export Capacities of Asian LDCs for Intra-regional Trade, funded by the Government of People’s Republic of China (PRC). Within the framework of this project, he will be identifying Bangladeshi SME’s exporting and/or ready to export to China and collecting information on their export profile. This study will be used by ITC to train Bangladeshi SMEs and to increase their exports to China.

This project will strengthen relationship between ITC and DIU further and facilitate in enhancing the internationalization of DIU.
