Seminar on ‘Translation studies in Bangladesh’ at DIU

The speakers in a seminar underscored the need to introduce a course of translation study in different universities both in public and private sectors. English Department of Daffodil International University arranged the seminar titled ‘Translation Studies in Bangladesh’ at DIU auditorium on April 30, 2011.

The keynote speech was delivered by Professor Dr. Fakrul Alam, Department of English, Dhaka University. The designated discussants were Professor Shafi Ahmed, Department of English, Jahangirnagar University, Professor Dr. Kazal Banarjee, Department of English, Dhaka University, Professor Dr. Mofizar Rahman, Former Chairman of English Department, Jagannath University, and Professor Dr. Shushil Kumar Das, Department of English, Daffodil International University.

Professor Dr. Lutfor Rahman. Vice Chancellor, Daffodil International University was the Chief Guest in the program. Faculty members of different universities along with the teachers and students of DIU were present as the audience. The whole program was coordinated and conducted by Dr. Binoy Barman, Head of the English Department, Daffodil International University. The program started with a short biography of Dr. Fakrul Alam presented by Ms. Umme Kulsum, Senior Lecturer of English Department, DIU.

The keynote speaker Dr. Fakrul Alam started his presentation by dividing the topic into three parts: (i) Theories of translation, (ii) Disciplinary Study and (iii) Bangladesh perspective. He discussed the significance of translation focusing on a historical background of translation from middle age to the present time.

Dr. Fakrul also talked about the gradual popularity of translation in different languages and the prospect of translation in Bangladesh. All through his discussion he mainly told about the academic translation and underscored the need to introduce a course of translation study in different universities both in public and private sectors. His enlightening, persuasive and entrancing presentation made the listeners listen to him with keen attention. The discussion of the other discussants was also informative.

After the discussion, there was a question-answer session where Dr. Fakrul Alam answered the queries of the audiences. The program ended with the vote of thanks given by Professor Dr. Golam Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, DIU.
