Department of Nutrition and Food Engineering (NFE) of Daffodil International University (DIU) organized a seminar on “Family Farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth” in the spirit of World Food Day 2014 on October 27, 2014 Monday at Startup Restaurant, Dhanmondi. Dhaka.

Mr. Mike Robson, Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Representative in Bangladesh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Mr. Md. Sabur Khan, Board of Trustees, Daffodil International University (Former President, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, DCCI) was present as the Guest of Honour.
Prof. Dr. M. Golam Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Acting Vice Chancellor), Daffodil International University presided over the seminar. Prof. Dr. A. I. Mustafa, Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Science delivered the welcome speech and Dr. K.M. Formuzul Haque, Professor, Department of NFE presented the keynote paper in the seminar. Dr. Md. Belal Hossain, Associate Professor, Department of NFE made a presentation on “Small Agro Farming” based on the project taken by the department at permanent campus in the seminar. Conducted by Ms. Moonmoon Hoq, Lectruer, the seminar was also addressed by Mr. Mahamudur Rahman, Assistant Professor of the department.

Addressing as the chief guest Mr. Mike Robson said, Food production in Bangladesh is gradually increasing since its independence which is encouraging for us. He termed Bangladesh as ‘Agro Economic Zone’ and said ‘Family farms are at the heart of Bangladesh life, they are both an economic and social force. While Bangladesh has made great strides towards the Millennium Development Goals, eradicating extreme poverty, improving education and reducing child and maternal mortality- undernutrition remains one major unfinished agenda, he added. He also said, We reaffirm our commitment to working with the government scientists, academics, civil society, the media and private sector to champion good nutrition for all. By working in collaboration, we can unlock the power of good nutrition and scale up effective solutions, such as family farming to ensure the people of Bangladesh can reach their full potential, he added.
Mr. Md. Sabur Khan in his speech said, practical demonstration and implementation is essential rather than seminar and workshop. He stressed on roof top gardening home gardening, poultry rearing and bring unutilized or vacant land under farming. He urged the students to gain knowledge in diversified crops for mitigation food crisis and become successful in professional life having experienced utilizing gardens, Labs, research labs set up in the permanent campus.
