Professor Atful Hye, Member, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh addressing as the chief guest at the International Conference on Tertiary Education
Three day long International Conference on “Tertiary Education: Realities & Challenges” from January 19-21, 2013 hosted Daffodil International University concluded today. Professor Atful Hye Shibly, Ph.D, Member, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh was present as the chief guest in the closing ceremony of the conference.
Presided over by Professor Dr. M. Lutfar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, Daffodil International University, Mr. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Daffodil International University and President Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry was present as the special guest. The function was also addressed by Conference Convener Emeritus Professor Dr. Aminul Islam, and Dr. Md. Fokhray Hossain, Registrar, Daffodil International University.
Addressing as the chief guest Professor Atful Hye Shibly said, Tertiary education exerts a direct influence on the productive capacities of the country which largely determines the level of economic development and its ability to compete in the global economy. University education provides the much needed thrust knowledge driven economic growth and poverty reduction by producing a trained and qualified labor force of scientists, technicians, teachers, professionals, civil servants, managerial and financial experts. Hence the improving the quality of its tertiary level education is vitally necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, he added.
He urged the universities to provide a proper atmosphere for faculty development which alone can ensure qualitative improvement in teaching-learning.
He also said, though the government has recently taken some measures for improvement of the quality education by proposing an Accreditation Council, making rules & regulations for Cross Border Higher Education but the relation between educational activity and economic growth has not been worked out efficiently either at the policy making or at the implementation level.
He said, with the assistance of the World Bank, UGC has undertaken a Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project popularly known as HEQEP to improve the quality of teaching-learning and research capacities of the universities of Bangladesh through encouraging both innovation and accountability and also by enhancing the technical and institutional capacity of higher education sector at large.
Addressing as the special guest Mr. Md. Sabur Khan Said, Students should be guided and make clear about their career before completion of their education. Students should be career oriented and must acquire sufficient knowledge to prepare themselves to fit for job market. He said, now a days technology made the education more effective, and interesting. He urged the teachers to be more technology friendly. He stressed on Open Education Resources, Art of Living and high social values to ensure quality education.
Ten keynote speakers from abroad joined the conference to share their experiences with the Bangladeshi educationists. Keynote Speakers are Sir John Daniel from UK, Professor Dr. Calvin Kalman from Canada, Professor Dr. Abtar Kaur, Dr. Ranjit Singh Malhi, Dr. Faridah Ibrahim and Professor Dr. Rozhan Idrus from Malaysia, Professor Dr. William W. Hoback from USA, Professor Dr. R. P. Mohanty, Professor Dr. Satyendra Patnaik and Professor Dr. Shriram Raghunathan from India.
In the total 4 working sessions a total of 12 keynote addresses and 8 conference papers were presented. A total of 350 teachers of different public and private universities participated in the conference. British Council and Exim Bank Ltd. were the support partners of the conference.
