Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, MP addressing as the chief guest at the Round Table Discussion on “Effective Traffic Management in Bangladesh: A Catalyst for Inclusive Growth of the Country” organized by Daffodil International University.

 

Daffodil International University (DIU) organized a Round Table Discussion on “Effective Traffic Management in Bangladesh: A Catalyst for Inclusive Growth of the Country” on 21 October, 2018 (Sunday) at 71 Milonayatan of the university.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister, Obaidul Quader MP, was present in the Round Table Conference as the Chief Guest while Mr. Khandakar Rakibur Rahman, Executive Director (Additional Secretary), Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) was present as the Special Guest. Dr. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Daffodil International University (DIU) present presented the Keynote Paper while Professor Shamsul Hoque, Ph.D, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was present as the Key Discussant in the program. Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan, Director General, Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence,  Professor Dr. Yousuf Mahbubul Islam, Vice Chancellor, DIU, Professor Dr. S M Mahbub Ul Haque Majumder, Pro Vice Chancellor, DIU, Dr. Md. Kamrul Ahsan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, Mir Rezaul Alam, BPM, Additional Commissioner ( Traffic), Forhad Mahmud, Senior Assistant Editor, Kaler Kantha took part in the discussion.

While addressing as the chief guest Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, MP said that traffic jam is not a cause of infrastructure problem or engineering problem. Most of the cases, it causes due to lack of our awareness and mentality problem. Our pedestrian are not interested to use foot over bridge, foot paths and drivers as well as  mass people are also not aware on road etiquette that’s why traffic jam cannot be resolved completely. Most of the time we see that our VIP cars move to a wrong way violating the traffic signal, our university buses are also break the traffic rules. First of all we have to solve this kind of mentality problem. he added.
Mr. Obaidul Quader also said, government has taken many initiatives for solving traffic jam like metro rail, fore lane, flyover building etc. When all this initiative will be completed, we can see the change of traffic problem. However if people are  not aware, then metro rail, flyover cannot bear any success to remove traffic jam. In the meantime he thanked Daffodil International University for taking such a good initiative to run a research on this kind of public based problem.
While presenting the keynote paper Dr. Md. Sabur Khan said that Bangladesh is suffering from traffic jam for a long time. Nowadays it looks like unbearable. In 1971 public transport of Dhaka city were run as 60 km per hour. But now in 2018 public transport of Dhaka city are running as 6 km per hour. We need to change this situation. That is why Daffodil International University has taken a research initiative to remove this traffic problem.
In his presentation, Dr. Md. Sabur Khan show many proposals for solving traffic jam. The remarkable proposal are: multilevel vehicle parking made by steel, CC TV use for controlling all road of the city, create U-loop, Use google map etc.   
Dr. Md. Sabur Khan also said, we want to take a district for model to applying our research and make the city jam-free. He expressed hope that if we do this successfully then another district will be encouraged.  For that he expects help from District Commissioner.
Addressing as special guest Khandakar Rakibur Rahman, Executive Director (Additional Secretary), Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) said, universities of developed countries plays a vital role as think tank and Daffodil International University is doing that research initiative.
As part of social accountability, Daffodil International University (DIU) thinks of the challenges of existing traffic system and based on quality research, DIU has engaged itself to come up with innovative solutions to tackle key challenges of traffic system of the country. In view to focus on pragmatic solutions on traffic management, Daffodil International University (DIU) has engaged its intellectual resources to explore possible ways out, which was shared with policy makers, public sector, academician, transportation expert, private sector.
As a part of the research agenda Daffodil International University has already created a online based Traffic Forum http://traffic.daffodil.family/index.php to discuss traffic issues, areas of research and innovative solutions.
