Advancing National Energy Security: Daffodil Signs PPA for 3.4 MW Power Project
In a significant step toward expanding the use of renewable energy and building a sustainable campus, Daffodil International University has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Paramount Group for the implementation of a 3.4 megawatt solar power project. This initiative marks a major advancement in the adoption of environmentally friendly energy solutions.
Implemented under the OPEX model, the project allows the university to benefit from solar power without any upfront investment, while ensuring long-term cost stability. The initiative is expected to reduce approximately 3,500 to 4,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to planting around 60,000 trees. As the system does not require water usage or generate harmful gas emissions, it is considered a fully environmentally sustainable project.
Through net metering facilities, surplus electricity generated from the project can be supplied to the national grid in exchange for credits, further reducing the university’s electricity costs. At the same time, the project will reduce reliance on imported fuel and contribute to foreign currency savings.
The signing ceremony was held at Daffodil Smart City, the university’s permanent campus. It was attended by Paramount Group Chairman Mr Shakhawat Hossain, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Daffodil International University Dr Md Sabur Khan, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr M R Kabir, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Mohammad Masum Iqbal, Treasurer Dr Hamidul Haque Khan, Registrar Dr Mohammad Nadir Bin Ali, and Board of Trustees member Dr Mohammad Emran Hossain, along with deans, department heads, and senior administrative officials.
Speaking at the event, Paramount Group Chairman Shakhawat Hossain said, “This partnership with Daffodil International University is a matter of great pride for us. We believe investing in renewable energy is not just a business decision, but also part of our social responsibility. Through this project, we aim to make a tangible contribution to environmental protection, energy conservation, and sustainable development. We are also pleased that Daffodil, as the first university in Bangladesh, will implement cutting-edge solar technology, setting a positive example for the education and energy sectors.”
Chairman of Daffodil international University Board of Trustees Dr Md Sabur Khan remarked, “Sustainable development is no longer optional, it is a necessity. Daffodil always strives to work with a forward-looking perspective. This solar project reflects that vision, combining education, technology, and environmental responsibility. Our goal is not only to create a green campus, but also to cultivate a responsible and aware future generation. This initiative will help mitigate Bangladesh’s energy challenges and promote clean energy usage. We believe such projects will also encourage government and private sectors to invest further in renewable energy. Ultimately, this project benefits not just Daffodil or Paramount Group, but the entire nation.”
Led by Professor Dr M Shamsul Alam, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and guided by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, this project establishes a model of effective and sustainable partnership between Daffodil International University and Paramount Group.
Beyond energy benefits, the initiative will serve as a practical learning platform for students, enabling hands-on experience with renewable energy technologies and supporting research in sustainable energy solutions.
University authorities emphasised that this initiative is more than a contractual agreement; it is a critical step toward building a sustainable, environmentally responsible, and self-reliant future.
