The Department of English of Daffodil International University celebrated its 12th founding anniversary with a glorious, day long program titled ‘12 Years of Excellence’. The program was held on 31 October 2016, Monday, at the auditorium of Daffodil Tower-5.
The Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University, Dr. Yousuf Mahbubul Islam was present in the program as the Chief Guest, and renowned academician of English Literature and Language, Dr. Fakrul Alam of the University of Dhaka was present as the Guest of Honor. Among others the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor A. M. M. Hamidur Rahman, the Head of English, Ms. Shamsi Ara Huda, Head (In-charge) of English, Dr. Md. Mohoshin Reza, and Managing Director of Rasel Industries, Mr. Shamsul Bashar graced the opening ceremony. Along with the faculty members of the English Department, the event was also attended by some 400 participants consisting of the former and current students of the department.

Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Daffodil International University, Dr. Yousuf Mahbubul Islam  and renowned academician of English Literature and Language, Dr. Fakrul Alam of the University of Dhaka along with other distinguished guests inaugurating the ‘12 Years of Excellence’ celebration program through cutting a cake.

 

Dr. Fakrul Alam, in his rousing speech, discussed the meaning of studying ‘English’ and the role of ‘education’. Calling ‘English’ a living thing, he inspired the audience to make it ‘one of the loves’ of their lives. He also mentioned that education is a lifelong process, and now that the English Department of DIU had completed its 12 years, the pursuit of excellence should be carried on more rigorously.
The Dean of FHSS, Dr. Hamidur Rahman emphasized the department’s effort to achieve excellence. He said that the continuous participations of both, the faculties and the students, in different international exchange programs proved the department’s intention to be an international standard one. Dr. Yousuf M. Islam, the Honorable Vice Chancellor of DIU, congratulated al faculty members, alumni and students of the department for its completion of 12 academic years, and inspired the students to practice their language skills more to ensure fine communication. The opening ceremony, which started with an inspiring welcome speech from the head of the Department, Ms. Shamsi Ara Huda, ended with another jovial speech by the acting Head of the English Department, Dr. Md. Mohoshin Reza. Both Heads reconfirmed department’s commitment to achieve excellence. They inspired the students to be more persevering and thanked the guests for coming. Young music sensation, Mr. Rezaul Karim Leemon was also present in the opening ceremony, and he inspired the students by singing two of his beautiful songs. The program ended with the presentation of crests to honorable guests on behalf of the department.
The opening ceremony was followed by day long cultural activities which were full of music, dance, singing, acting, ramp modeling and band show. The alumni, the faculty members, and current students, from all three campuses and all available batches, took turn to perform on the stage. With regular breaks for lunch, snacks and prayers, the program continued up to the late afternoon. The three best performances of the day were judged and awarded by a panel of teachers. The exciting-cum-exhausting daylong event ended with a vote of thanks from the English Literary Club’s (ELC) moderator, Ms. Afroza Akhter Tina, Senior Lecturer, Department of English, DIU.
